FLOREZ CRIES RACISM IN VETO OF OVERTIME PAY
07-28-2010 We caught Governor Schwarzenegger off guard Wednesday afternoon near Tehachapi, when we asked about reports that he vetoed a bill granting standard overtime pay to farm workers. "I don't get into legislation before I see it on my desk, so I cannot comment." He must read quickly, because hours later, his office issued his veto message. State Senator Dean Florez (D-Shafter) decried the death of his bill, saying the Governor trashed a chance to wipe this injustic off California's law books, but instead worked "in the spirit of the segregationist South against the least protected members of our society." The Governor's statement read that standard overtime would force farm owners to reduce workers' hours. He added that farm labor is seasonal and lacks a standard 40-hour work week. Farm workers get overtime after 10 hours of work each day.
GOVERNOR DECLARES FIRE EMERGENCY, VISITS TEHACHAPI
07-28-2010 Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has declared a state of emergency in Kern County because of the Bull and the West wildfires, which together have consumed 17,500 acres as of Wednesday evening, and destroyed dozens of homes and buildings. The proclamation frees up more resources and money from around the state to fight the fires. Schwarzenegger toured areas near Tehachapi on Wednesday afternoon, to see the damage from the West Fire in person. He assured a small gathering at a news conference that the state is ready to help. "We never fell short on any money when it comes to fighting fires, or for any emergencies, because I've always said that the number-one priority is public safety."
